Wirral was hit by a huge thunderstorm on Saturday night after forecasters placed the area on a severe weather warning and there could be more storms on the way.

The yellow severe weather warning was in place until 7pm on Saturday, but the storms didn’t hit until around 9pm.

Heavy rain and frequent lightning lit up Merseyside in a stunning light display that some facebook users described as ‘the best in years’.

There could be more dramatic thunderstorms over the next few days as the Met Office predict that they are expecting more storms to break out in the coming days.

They said in a tweet storms ‘should clear the northwest soon but we’re expecting more of the same in the days to come’.

The latest forecasts say that “heavy showers will move into the region through the afternoon and evening on Sunday with the risk of thunder and hail although these largely in southern parts.

Monday will see “showers develop in the afternoon. The showers will be heavy with the risk of thunder at times. “
