It’s the Autumn Equinox TODAY, but what does it mean ?

Autumn Sunrise – Sefik Akkurt

An equinox is an astronomical event in which the plane of Earth’s equator passes through the centre of the Sun.

On an equinox, day and night are of approximately equal duration all over the planet – a day and night of roughly 12 hours each.

Today’s equinox that occurred at 8:50am marks the start of Autumn after which nights start to get longer than days until the winter solstice on December 22, when the pattern will reverse.

Temperatures will also gradually begin to drop as winter edges nearer.

The next equinox will be the spring equinox on 20th March 2019.
