Risk of cave collapse on Hilbre island after fire

Steve Williams

Hilbre Island remains closed today after a cave fire that could lead to a collapse on the Island.

Emergency services raced to Hilbre Island last night after smoke was spotted pouring out of a cave.

Building materials are thought to have caught fire inside the cave and police, coastguard and fire services were on scene by 7:30pm.

The island was evacuated as fumes and smoke from the flames covered the island, which could be seen from many parts of the Wirral.

Merseyside fire and Rescue service have said that the Island will remain closed today due to risk of a ‘cave overhang collapse’.

MFRS said: “Exclusion zone remains around island area involved- barriers are being placed to prevent access as risk of cave overhang collapse.

“Please do not approach the island for your safety. The RNLI, Police & Coastguard are in attendance.”

The incident will be re-assessed again tomorrow morning and an update will be posted on Wirral Coastguards social media.
