Strong winds from Storm Erik set to continue into the weekend as 60 mph gusts forecast

Strong winds have battered the UK over the last few days which led to trees falling across Wirral on Thursday morning.

The region has been on severe weather warnings for strong winds since Thursday and will remain in place until Saturday.

Storm Erik arrived during Friday and 80 mph winds to parts of Ireland.

Merseyside got away with experiencing the worst of the winds, however, the worst of the winds are set to arrive as the weekend nears.

The weekend will get off to a windy start with gusts of up to 60 mph expected during Saturday morning.

The Met Office say: “This evening will be windy with a few showers. Heavy rain will reach Cumbria and Lancashire later in the night.

“Winds will strengthen everywhere, widely reaching gale force by morning. Severe gales are likely on the coast and high ground.

“A swathe of very strong westerly winds is expected to move east through Saturday morning, easing from the west during the day.

“Inland gusts of 55 mph are expected quite widely, with some places having gusts to 70 mph, more particularly around exposed coasts and hills.”
