There were reports of major traffic problems tonight on Wirral as wintry weather grips the region.

Snow and hail showers hit Heswall, Barnston and West Kirby tonight and with temperatures falling to near freezing tonight the weather seems to be causing problems on the roads.

Mile long queues were reported as traffic built up due to ‘treacherous conditions’ and stagecoach had to cancel bus services to to the bad weather.

Stagecoach said on their twitter page that traffic had been ‘brought to a complete standstill’ and that services had been cancelled.

Marc Johnson on twitter said: “Roads in Heswall are treacherous. Queues miles long, air temperature here -1.2°c so no chance of the hail that fell earlier melting.”

Other pictures showed cars skidding out of control in the difficult icy conditions.

Road users in West Kirby reported several car crashes, abandoned cars and 2 hours just to travel 13 miles.

Merseyside is under yellow weather warning of ICE tonight as temperatures could fall below freezing in parts.

With those low temperatures any rain or hail will re-freeze which could cause further traffic problems on Wednesday and injuries due to the slippery conditions.

The Met Office say: “Ice will form in places later on Tuesday afternoon and overnight into Wednesday, especially where wintry showers leave surfaces wet.

“Further hail, sleet and snow showers are also likely at times. Accumulations of several centimetres are likely in places, mainly above 200 metres.”
