Large rescue operation launched as person spotted in the water at a Liverpool dock

A large rescue operation was launched during the early hours of this morning.

Witnesses reportedly spotted a person in the water near to Canning Dock in Liverpool at around 2:10am.

The rescue operation sparked a huge multi agency response from across Merseyside.

Rescue helicopters search the Mersey

Wirral Coastguard teams were called out alongside Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Merseyside Police, National Police Air Service New Brighton Lifeboat, Marine Fire One and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 936.

Search teams and the two helicopters carried out a thorough search in a northerly and southerly direction from the shore, the river and from the air.

With nothing found, all agencies were stood down. Merseyside Police will continue with their investigation.
