Merseyside has been gripped by freezing temperatures throughout the week, with temperatures dipping to a record low -5.1C across the region.

The freezing weather caused problems on the travel network as Merseyrail announced a reduced service on Firday as their trains started to freeze in the harsh conditions.

The River Mersey also appeared to partially freeze over as daytime temperatures remained well below freezing.

But there is good news, this weekend temperatures will very slowly start to recover.

Saturday will remain cold with temperatures around 3C but by Sunday a change in wind direction will allow the milder conditions to return.

Although still below average for the time of year, Sunday’s temperatures of 7C will be a much welcomed return to temperatures above freezing on Merseyside.

The Met Office say: “Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow, with the snow mainly confined to the hills and high ground, as temperatures gradually start to rise on Sunday.

“Temperatures less cold than recent days on Monday. An increasing chance of mist and fog”.

The milder weather is set to last through next week, it looks like the beast from the east has finally left.
