Merseyside woke up to 4-5cm of snow this morning as freezing winds from Russia blasted into the region.

A double weather warning for snow and wind has also been issued by the Met Office for Friday when even more bad weather is expected.

An area of low pressure that will bring severe winds and heavy rain to Portugal will head towards the UK and will clash with the freezing air.

This is expected to bring winds of up to 45mph to Merseyside along with more snow during Friday and Saturday.

The Met Office expect that the worst of the winds will hit during early Friday when temperatures will feel closer to -8C due to the increased wind speeds.

The snow and wind warnings are in place from 12:05am Friday to 11:55pm on Saturday.

A forecaster at the Met Office said: “Further spells of snow could continue to move north through Friday and into Saturday, with the potential to produce widespread snow, accompanied by strong winds – although the winds will tend to ease a little through Friday”
