How windy will it get on Merseyside from Storm Eleanor ?

Storm Eleanor has bought chaos to parts of Northern Ireland overnight, leaving thousands without power and coastal areas flooded due to storm surges.

It hasn’t been as bad across Mersyeside, however, winds were still very strong overnight and will continue to be strong throughout today.

Last night winds hit 6omph across the region and will still continue at a gusty 50mph through the rest of Wednesday.

A Met Office yellow severe weather warning remains in place until 7pm tonight, after which winds are expected to die down.

The Met Office forecast for today reads: “Storm Eleanor will bring very strong winds today, with large waves in coastal areas.

“Scattered blustery showers will push in too, with some drier and brighter spells in between”.

The environment agency has warned that flooding to properties in areas of Merseyside could occur during Wednesday.

Carol Holt, flood duty manager for the Environment Agency, said: “Unsettled weather with strong winds and at times large waves, combined with high tides, could lead to some coastal flooding from Tuesday until Thursday.

“Our frontline teams are on the ground checking defences and may close coastal flood gates this week. We urge people to stay safe on the coast – take extreme care on coastal paths and promenades, and don’t put yourself in unnecessary danger trying to take ‘storm selfies’.

“If you’re travelling, please check your route before setting off and don’t drive through flood water”.

winds will still be strong through Wednesday as the fifth storm of the season passes, Merseyside will see gusts of up to 50mph throughout the day.
