The Merseyside derby is set to go ahead despite warnings from forecasters that heavy snow is on the way.

Merseyside is under an amber weather warning for Sunday as up to 10-20 cm of heavy snow is predicted to affect the region.

The weather warning is in place from 4am to 6pm on Sunday, as a weather front containing heavy rain will clash with colder air above the country, turning to snow.

Liverpool FC has said that the game will go ahead despite the stunning weather forecast for Sunday, but called for fans to be careful around the stadium.

The statement reads: “Due to the inclement weather forecast on Sunday, Liverpool FC would like to remind supporters to take extra care when travelling to Anfield and encourage fans to plan their journey in advance.

“Supporters are encouraged to arrive at the stadium early and check the Merseytravel and Merseyrail websites for any updates before they travel. “Sunday’s game against Everton is planned to go ahead.

The volume of snow could lead to severe travel problems such as cancellations, delays and even some parts of rural communities being cut off, warn the Met Office.

A forecaster at the Met Office said: “A band of rain, heavy at times, is expected to move eastwards over the UK. With cold air in place, a spell of heavy snow looks likely to develop on its northern edge.

“10 cm looks likely quite widely within the warning area, with 15-20 cm in places. There is increasing certainty in the track and location of the heaviest snow”.
