Brightest supermoon of 2017 will light up skies over Merseyside

The brightest supermoon of 2017 will light up the skies over Merseyside this weekend.

Known as the ‘cold moon’ as it appears on a cold night in December, the supermoon will be visible on the night of December 3rd.

The supermoon will be the brightest of the year as it appears during a full moon unlike previous appearances, which means it will provide a spectacular look at our nearest celestial neighbour.

The moon is usually about 238,000 miles away from Earth. But because its orbit isn’t a perfect circle, it sometimes gets much closer.

During December 3rd it will be a mere 222,135 miles away from the Earth and will be 14% bigger and 30% brighter than usual.

It is the last supermoon of 2017. The next is on 2nd January 2018.
