Merseyside saw huge amounts of hail fall in the early hours of this morning, as freezing temperatures continue grip the region.
The sudden downpour of hail lead to difficult driving conditions on the M53, with many witnesses describing it as an ice rink.
Pictures showed the scene of a dramatic crash on the M53 as one driver lost control and smashed through the central reservation into on coming traffic.
The Met Office expect that Merseyside could see further wintry showers through the weekend, which could see more difficult driving conditions.
Forecasters say: “The wintry showers will continue overnight, leaving icy stretches where they have fallen.
“Where skies have remained clear there will be a widespread frost forming”.
