Nights are getting chillier so you may want to keep warm if you’re heading to a firework display this Bonfire Night.
These sound sensational!:
1. Hot Spiced Apple Juice
strips of orange peel
1 cinnamon stick, plus extra to garnish, if you like
sugar or honey, to taste
Simmer the apple juice with the strips of orange peel, cinnamon stick and cloves for about 5-10 mins until all the flavours have infused. Sweeten to taste.
Serve each drink with a little orange peel and a piece of cinnamon stick, if you like.
2. Hot Mulled Wine
1 bottle red wine
60g/2oz demerara sugar
1 cinnamon stick
1 orange, halved
1 dried bay leaf
Put the wine in a saucepan with the orange, sugar, bayleaf and the spices.
Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved.
Taste to see if you want the wine sweeter, and add more sugar to taste.
Off the heat, stir in the sloe or damson gin if you are using it.
Strain into heatproof glasses and serve at once.
3. Hot Earl Grey Toddy
Earl Grey Hot Toddy (serves 2)
2 Earl Grey tea bags
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1-2 oz of your favorite bourbon
4 Tbsp of fresh lemon juice
2 Tbsp of honey (more if you want it a little sweeter)
Put the water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove the water from the heat, add in the tea bags and cover. Allow the tea to steep for about 3-5 minutes.
After a few minutes, pour in the lemon juice and mix in the honey.
Add 1/2-1 oz of the bourbon to two coffee mugs, pour the tea mixture over each. Garnish with a slice of lemon.
4. Pumpkin Pie Hot Chocolate
2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 teaspoon vanilla
3.5 ounces white chocolate, roughly chopped
1/4 cup pumpkin pie liquor
Place all ingredients except for liquor in a medium saucepan and cook under medium-low heat, stirring constantly.
Once the ingredients have thoroughly combined and chocolate has melted, add liquor.
5. Red Wine Hot Chocolate
3 tsp unsweetened dark cocoa powder
4 tsp sugar
1/4 cup red wine
1 cup milk
pinch of salt
Bring wine to a simmer over low heat.
Add the wine over the cocoa and milk mixture, and bring everything to a boil.
Meanwhile in a bowl combine cocoa powder with sugar and salt.
Add 2 or 3 tbsp of milk and stir well to combine.
Add the rest of the milk, stir well and add over the wine.
Bring to a boil while whisking from time to time.
Pour into your serving cups and serve.
