This nostalgic footage shows what the 1999 solar eclipse looked like in Birkenhead

With parts of the US seeing a total solar eclipse on Monday, here’s a look back at when the Birkenhead on Wirral last saw a total solar eclipse.

On August 11th 1999 a total solar eclipse treated thousands of people in Cornwall and other parts of the south.

Merseyside was also plunged into darkness, but saw a partial eclipse, when 96% of sunlight was blocked.

The reality of it as stunning images were broadcast on a special televised event on BBC One, was that the weather ruined efforts to watch the eclipse.

The footage at the top of the page shows what the solar eclipse looked like from Birkenhead, as office workers and members of the public headed outside to catch a glimpse of the rare event.
