Take a look back at the UK’s total solar eclipse in 1999

With parts of the US seeing a total solar eclipse on Monday, here’s a look back at when the UK last saw a solar eclipse.

On August 11th 1999 a total solar eclipse treated thousands of people in Cornwall and other parts of the south.

Merseyside was also plunged into darkness, but saw a partial eclipse, when 96% of sunlight was blocked.

The reality of it as stunning images were broadcast on a special televised event on BBC One, was that the weather ruined efforts to watch the eclipse.

Rain and cloudy conditions blocked any hopes of watching the eclipse from the ground, but RAF crews manged to broadcast stunning images to millions of people watching on BBC One.
