A major rescue operation was launched after two males were reportedly seen calling for help in the River Mersey this morning.
RNLI, coastguard and emergency services all rushed to the scene around Monksferry to help pull one of the men to safety.
One man was pulled from the water breathing and was taken to hospital, it is been revealed tonight that the other male is now missing.
A spokeswoman from Merseyside Police said: “Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, the coastguard and North West Ambulance Service attended.
“One man was taken to safety at 9.20am and to hospital for further treatment.
“His condition is described as stable.

“A search was carried out for the second man who has now been reported missing.
“An investigation is currently ongoing.”
Mersey Ferry services were also suspended at the request of emergency services.
