Merseyside baked in temperatures hotter than Italy’s capital Rome today, which stayed at a mild 23C.
The mercury across Wirral, Liverpool and the rest of region crept up to 27C, making it the hottest day of the year so far.

Many people headed for local parks on lunch breaks to soak up the sun and there will be another chance to do it on Friday as the warm weather is expected to continue.
Tempeatures could again reach near 30C on Friday as plenty of warm clear sunny spells are forecast, before a thundery breakdown at the weekend.

Chief Meteorologist Paul Gundersen said: “The whole of the UK will experience some very warm and sunny weather on Thursday and Friday as high pressure draws continental air from the south.
“During Saturday, showers and thunderstorms will spread from the south west with potential for a few intense downpours.

“This will be followed by cooler conditions on Sunday and Monday, although still with some fine weather in places.
“However, further thundery rain may affect parts of the south later”.
