There are two ways to calculate when spring starts in the UK, there’s the Astronomical and the Meteorological start of spring.
According to the Met Office astronomical seasons refer to the position of Earth’s orbit in relation to the sun taking into account equinoxes and solstices. – March 1st.

Meteorological seasons are instead based on the annual temperature cycle and measure the meteorological state as well as coinciding with the calendar to determine a clear transition between the seasons. – 20 March 2017 and ends on 20 June 2017.
The spring equinox on 20th March is mostly referred to as the start of spring as days begin to get longer and lighter.
