Britain has hottest September day for 105 years, while Merseyside is rocked by thunderstorms

Today a record temperature of 34.4C was recorded in Kent making it the hottest September day since 1911.

The Met Office also confirmed it was the hottest day of the year so far too.

While the records were broken Merseyside was issued weather warnings for thundery showers.

Outbreaks of showery rain turned torrential and thundery across parts of the region around 2pm but the Met office say the weather will improve tomorrow.

The forecast reads: “A fairly cloudy start to the day, though cloud soon breaking to leave a dry, warm and humid day with good sunny spells. The maximum temperature will be 27 °C.
