On Sunday night the Northern Lights put on a beautiful show across Wirral and the rest of Merseyside.

Stargazers were treated to a spectacular light display last night as the Northern Lights were visible across most parts of the region and the UK.

We were sent these amazing pictures via twitter by David Chennell who was at Hoylake:

The spectacular lights are caused by charged particles emitted by the sun colliding with atoms in the earth’s atmosphere – different gases create the range of colours.

Solar eruptions from the sun travel at 2,000,000 MPH and can take around 2 days to travel 93,000,000 miles to earth.
