UPDATED: Man rescued from River Mersey after trying to save dog in strong tides

A man and his pet Labrador were rescued from the River Mersey this morning after getting into difficulty in the rivers strong tide.

The dramatic rescue took place near Seacombe Ferry Terminal at about 11:30, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said.

The owner entered the river mersey to try and retrieve his dog after it had chased a ball into the water.

After the owner had followed his pet into the river, he then got into distress in the rivers strong tide.

Once taken to safety both the man and dog were given a precautionary check by a paramedics, but were found to be unharmed.
