Friday night saw over 30,000 lightning strikes across the country and torrential downpours.
Places that saw the worst of the lightning and rain, such as Stevenage, saw 27mm of rain in one hour, which is just over half a month’s rain.

Wirral escaped the worst of the storms that started in the south and then moved northwards, but there was still dramatic scenes as some places on Wirral did experience some thunder and lightning.
On Wednesday, the highest temperature recorded was 36.7C at Heathrow, breaking the record for a July day, while many other places broke the 30C mark.
